A fight for survival: Overcoming trauma and illness
The rescue operation, while a victory for the dogs, was only the first step in their long road to recovery. The trauma from the puppy mill environment was severe, requiring intervention from authorities and immediate veterinary care. Despite their ordeal, the puppies, including Moka, demonstrated a remarkable resilience. However, Moka, along with two other pups, needed more intensive support. He, the most fragile of the group, required oxygen therapy and a blood transfusion at an emergency facility. Despite his condition, we clung to the hope that he would pull through.
Further examinations revealed a malnourished pup with diseased skin, resembling a bag of bones. Added to his physical struggles was a deep-seated fear of humans, a consequence of the neglect he’d endured. While other puppies thrived and found loving homes, or were placed in shelters with more capacity, Moka stayed with us alongside his two remaining companions. He received the necessary vaccinations but remained hospitalized for another week due to his ongoing medical needs. As his brothers, Nabi and Xabi, were adopted one after another, Moka’s progress seemed slower. He appeared frail, and his appearance – a result of past neglect – might not have been as immediately appealing to potential adopters. Despite the frustration, our commitment remained unwavering. We knew his struggles weren’t his fault, and we vowed to give him the best care possible.
Strength and resilience: Unveiling Moka’s true potential
A turning point arrived after a week. Moka’s appetite increased, and he began eating independently. We prioritized ensuring access to sunlight to bolster his immune system, even though he still required regular medical attention. Medicated baths replaced his initial aversion, becoming part of a routine that helped heal his skin condition. By day 15, the transformation was remarkable. Moka was almost entirely weaned from raw food, comfortably tolerating the medicated baths, and his behavior displayed a significant improvement. His fear of humans began to lessen, replaced by a newfound openness. Here was a dog blossoming, a testament to the incredible resilience of animals when shown love, care, and the medical attention they desperately need.
Moka’s story is one of heartbreak, perseverance, and ultimately, hope. It serves as a reminder of the plight of countless dogs trapped in puppy mills and the dedication of rescue organizations that fight for their well-being. We believe Moka, with his newfound strength and spirit, will soon be the perfect companion for someone who can offer him a loving forever home.a
