It was meant to be a routine drive to work for plumber Carlos Carillo and his coworker when they noticed something unusual in a ditch off the country road. “We didn’t realize he was a dog at first,” Carrillo, a Shoreline Plumbing employee in Texas, told The Dodo. “We turned around and saw him.” The doggie’s mouth was taped shut, and he was bound with tubing. Carillo and his pal hurried to liberate the dog. “He appeared well,” Carrillo added. “He was very affectionate and enjoyed being the center of attention.” He was most likely only there for a day or two.”

The plumbers loaded the puppy into their vehicle and drove him to Peewee’s Pet Adoption, a no-kill shelter nearby. “Look at that face,” Carrillo commented, referring to how glad the dog appeared to be alive. “He knows he’s been saved!”

The dog was found to be in fair condition despite having heartworms, for which they began treatment. “His tail won’t stop wagging,” a Peewee’s Pet Adoption spokeswoman told The Dodo. “He’s a real sweetie.”

The individual who heartlessly abandoned the puppy was never traced, but due to the plumbers, the dog was given a second chance at life. All he needs now is a permanent loving home.
