Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects dogs, primarily in their hind limbs. It is a debilitating condition that can lead to paralysis in dogs. In this blog, we will explore what DM is, its causes, symptoms, and the available treatments to manage and improve the quality of life for affected dogs.

Understanding Degenerative Myelopathy:
Degenerative Myelopathy is a genetic disorder that affects the spinal cord of dogs. The disease causes a gradual degeneration of the spinal cord’s white matter, leading to loss of movement and coordination. The disease primarily affects older dogs, with the symptoms usually appearing around the age of 8-9 years. Breeds such as German Shepherds, Boxers, and Welsh Corgis are more prone to developing DM.

Symptoms of Degenerative Myelopathy:
The symptoms of DM begin gradually, with the dog experiencing a slight loss of coordination in their hind legs. This can progress to a complete loss of coordination, and the dog may struggle to stand, walk or climb stairs. As the disease progresses, the dog may develop urinary and fecal incontinence. It is essential to recognize the early symptoms and seek veterinary care immediately.

Diagnosis of Degenerative Myelopathy:
Diagnosing DM can be challenging as it shares similarities with other neurological conditions. A thorough physical examination, medical history, and genetic testing can aid in the diagnosis. The genetic test can identify if a dog carries the gene responsible for DM, even if they do not exhibit symptoms. This information can be useful in breeding programs to prevent the disease’s spread.

Treatment Options for DM:
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for DM. However, there are various treatment options available to manage the symptoms and improve the dog’s quality of life. Physical therapy, such as hydrotherapy and acupuncture, can help with maintaining muscle mass and improving mobility. Mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, harnesses, and ramps, can aid in movement and prevent further injury. Medications such as NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, and steroids can help manage pain and inflammation.

Degenerative Myelopathy is a devastating condition that affects many dogs, but it is essential to recognize the early symptoms and seek veterinary care immediately. Although there is no cure for DM, there are various treatments available that can help manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for affected dogs. With proper care and support, dogs with DM can live happy and fulfilling life.
