When illness forced veterinarians to remove Great Dane Lily’s eyes, it seemed as if her chances of living a fulfilling life were bleak.
However, no one expected that Madison, Lily’s companion, would step up and become her guide dog.
These two have been inseparable for years. Now they find themselves searching for a home due to their owners being unable to continue caring for them.
The unique aspect for anyone who adopts it is that Lily and Madison are a package deal. They have been waiting patiently at the Dogs Trust rehoming center in Shrewsbury since July.
Louise Campbell, manager, said: “Madison is Lily’s guide dog. When they are out together, Madison takes the lead most of the time while Lily walks close by to follow her cues. It’s really a joy to witness. Madison is always watching her.”
Lily was a puppy when she contracted a disease that caused her eyelashes to grow into her eyeballs, causing irreparable damage.
During this time, seven-year-old Madison took Lily under her wing and their bond became stronger.
These loyal companions lived together until their previous owners made the decision that they could no longer provide care for them. Miss Campbell reported that despite Lily’s lack of sight, her other senses had improved. Although they are not separated frequently, Lily can sense Madison’s presence nearby. They cuddle each other when sleeping and communicate loudly to each other.
Although they didn’t analyze their barking specifically, Ms. Campbell pointed out that if Lily wants to move but Madison doesn’t, the pitch of her bark changes in her own way. The two dogs share a bond. Enjoy each other’s company.
According to Miss Campbell, Lily behaves like any dog and from a distance one would not realize she has any visual impairment. She also stated that both dogs have a forward-looking outlook on life and always see the glass as half full.
After spending a long time together, they are satisfied. Follow their daily routine lovingly. Miss Campbell also noted that their size, age and requirements for adoption as a pair may have deterred their owners. She advised anyone thinking of adopting to carefully evaluate their lifestyle and understand the responsibilities involved.
“They don’t seem huge when you meet them in person. These two wonderful big girls should have the opportunity to spend the rest of their lives together in an environment.”
