The Long Road to the Shelter

Peaches’ first arrival at the Dallas Animal Services shelter dates back to November 18, 2012. At that time, she was just one of many dogs seeking a forever home. By January 12, 2013, she was adopted, a hopeful turn in her story. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived; Peaches was returned to the shelter on August 30, 2013, for reasons that remain unclear. Her plight continued as she came back to the shelter as a stray on May 21, 2014, with her previous owner failing to reclaim her.

The pattern of hope followed by disappointment persisted. On November 13, 2014, Peaches found a new home once more, but again, her stay was fleeting. By March 8, 2015, she was back at the shelter, this time with her owner not reclaiming her. Peaches was transferred from another shelter on March 19, 2015, only to find herself in the same cycle of temporary homes and returns.

Health Issues and Current Condition

Now, in August 2024, Peaches is facing her most challenging circumstances yet. Her advanced age and past experiences have taken a toll on her health. A recent physical examination revealed several concerning issues. Peaches is flea-infested, has difficulty walking, and exhibits stiffness and pain, particularly in her right hind limb. Her health report shows severe dental disease, an enlarged lymph node, and muscle atrophy, primarily in her right hind leg.

Further examination revealed additional problems: she has lenticular sclerosis (a condition affecting the eyes), black debris in her ears, and yeast and rod infections. Her condition, described as “crepitus” in the right stifle, indicates joint pain and stiffness, which contributes to her current discomfort. The shelter has started her on oral carprofen, a medication to manage her pain and inflammation, and will conduct further tests to better understand her needs.

The Urgent Need for Rescue or Adoption

Despite the grim state of her health, Peaches remains in need of a rescue or adopter who can provide her with the care and comfort she deserves. The shelter has tagged her for rescue, indicating their hope that someone will step forward to give her a chance at a better life. It is crucial to remember that no dog is truly safe until they have left the shelter environment, and Peaches’ situation underscores the importance of timely intervention.

Peaches’ story is a poignant reminder of the many dogs in shelters who have experienced a series of unfortunate events, often through no fault of their own. As a heartworm-positive dog, she will receive treatment at no cost to the adopter, making it possible for someone to offer her a fresh start without additional financial burden.
