A Puppy’s Ordeal

Niko, a seven-month-old Border Collie, is now a bundle of joy, frolicking in dog parks and basking in the love of his adoptive family. However, his journey to happiness was far from idyllic. As a 14-week-old puppy, he was subjected to horrific abuse at the hands of his former owner.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the puppy, then named Luca, suffered severe injuries including broken bones and severe burns. The cruelty was so extreme that the owner was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and other related offenses.

After enduring unimaginable pain, Luca was brought to a veterinary hospital where the extent of his injuries became apparent. Two femur fractures, three rib fractures, and extensive burns covered his body. The young puppy required intensive care for several days before being transferred to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center.

At the center, Luca received specialized medical treatment, including surgery to repair his broken legs. The staff was amazed by his resilience as he gradually recovered from his physical trauma. His sweet and playful nature began to shine through, capturing the hearts of his caregivers.

Niko has flourished in his new home. Despite the scars that remain as a haunting reminder of his past, he is a happy and energetic puppy. His favorite activities include playing hide-and-seek and socializing with other dogs at the park.
