One such story that captured hearts worldwide is that of a paralyzed dog from Botswana. This brave little pup, later named Poppy, had suffered a spinal injury that left her unable to walk. Yet, determined to find help, she dragged herself for kilometers through the unforgiving terrain.
Fortunately, fate intervened. A team of volunteers led by Susanne Vogel, working on a project to manage human-elephant conflict in the Northern Okavango Delta, witnessed Poppy’s desperate arrival at their remote camp.
“She practically had to crawl inside our study camp because her rear legs were immobilized,” Susanne said. “She couldn’t walk, but she was full of love and asking for help.” Poppy’s arrival at the camp marked a turning point in her life.

At just seven months old, Poppy was a fragile patient. Surgery offered a glimmer of hope, but the chances of survival were very low. Yet, the team refused to give up. They saw a spark in Poppy, a fierce determination to live.
