Rescue stories have a way of grabbing our hearts and not letting go! This is another of those stories, but you’ll like the joyful ending.
Aliki and Walter, newlyweds from Canada, were on their vacation in Greece when they came across an atrocity they had not expected: a dog being devoured alive by parasites with just weeks to live. He was a homeless who lived in a small town and was deteriorating to nothing more than skin and bone.
When the dog approached the driver’s window as they drove down the street, it was evident that he needed assistance! He cowered and was highly afraid when the couple first observed him, most likely due to prior abuse by strangers.
When the couple first spotted him, he cowered and was terrified, most likely due to previous encounters with individuals who had not been ‘especially friendly’ to him. Despite his dire circumstances, his small tail, which he tucked between his knees, wagged happily. He was relieved to find people who were decent enough to pay him any attention.
Inspired by Greek Animal Rescue and Diasozo, the pair decided to assist this miserable, lonely pooch. The two realized they couldn’t abandon him and indicated that something about him urged them to help him.
He was rescued from the street and given a can of food, which he ate in a few nibbles. He was then sent to the clinic, where he was treated for mange and had an intestinal parasite inspection.
The veterinarians felt that if he had continued to live on the streets, he would have died within weeks. But, happily, he was saved just in time and was on the mend.
After 5 months of therapy and care, Nelson’s hair had entirely restored and he seemed to be a completely different dog. His transformation was astounding, both physically and psychologically. He’d rediscovered his ability to trust, and he couldn’t stop grinning and wagging his tail.
He traveled to Canada once he was fully recovered to visit the couple who had saved his life. They took him in and were astounded by his transformation. Nelson is a beautiful puppy, and it’s amazing to think about how far he’s gone due to these newlyweds!
