The La Vista Police Department in Nebraska has introduced a remarkable and unique program aimed at finding loving homes for shelter dogs. The program, known as K9 For A Day, not only has a fantastic start but also brings joy to the dogs who get to enjoy a special “ride.”

In this heartwarming initiative, an officer from the police department visits the Nebraska Humane Society and selects a dog that is in need of a forever home. The chosen dog then gets to accompany the officer on a ride-along for the day. It’s an incredible opportunity for the dogs and the officers alike.

The benefits of the K9 For A Day program are numerous. Firstly, it provides the dogs with a break from the stressful shelter environment and allows them to interact with people directly. Additionally, it helps strengthen the bond between the officers and the community they serve. By raising awareness about shelter animals, the program significantly improves the chances of the dogs finding permanent homes.

Officer Bryan Waugh, the La Vista Police Captain, describes the program as an outstanding outreach initiative for both the dogs and the police department. He emphasizes that K9 For A Day not only raises awareness but also allows officers to build connections with their community.

The program has seen tremendous success since its inception. Not only do the dogs have a blast, but the officers do as well. The first dog to participate in K9 For A Day, Mickey, a friendly black and white bull terrier mix, joined Officer Jeannette on patrol. Mickey had a wonderful time visiting children, local businesses, going on foot patrols, and charming everyone he encountered. In a heartwarming video, Officer Jeannette is even seen teaching Mickey some new tricks.

Mickey’s experience outside the shelter was incredibly positive, and just a few days later, he found his forever home. We couldn’t be happier for Mickey and all the other dogs who will be fortunate enough to be chosen for K9 For A Day.
