The Franciscan monastery of Cochabamba in Bolivia has a new and adorable addition to its community. A little schnauzer pup named Carmelo has found his place within the monastery, becoming their beloved littlest Friar. In recognition of his important role, he has been bestowed with the name Friar Bigotón, which translates to “mustache” in Spanish. To complete his friar attire, he even wears a miniature Franciscan habit.

Carmelo, once a stray, has now found a loving home in the monastery. His life is now filled with joy, playfulness, and the love of his fellow brothers. “Here, all of the brothers love him very much. He is a creature of God,” says Jorge Fernandez, one of the friars.

While Carmelo’s main duties involve running, playing, and spreading happiness, he also has other responsibilities. He watches over the Koi ponds, offers companionship to everyone, warms hearts and laps, and generously shares his infectious smiles. In a delightful photo shared by Franciscan Kasper Mariusz Kaproń, Carmelo is even depicted “preaching to the fish.”

Beyond his playful nature, Brother Carmelo serves a more serious purpose. He is an advocate for other dogs in need of loving homes, just as he once was. His heartwarming story highlights the valuable work of the animal rescue group, Proyecto Narices Frías (Cold Nose Project), which made Carmelo’s adoption possible. The group hopes that Carmelo’s story will inspire more monasteries to open their doors to needy pets.

“If only all the churches of our country adopt a dog and care for him like Friar Bigotón,” the group expressed in a Facebook post, “we are sure that the parishioners would follow his example.” Carmelo’s journey serves as a reminder of the countless amazing pets out there in need of loving families. By opening our hearts and homes, we can make a significant difference in their lives.

Please share this heartwarming story with your friends to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption and the boundless love that animals bring to our lives.
