This week, an Indiana family faced a situation in which their beloved dog was put out after being rescued from a home fire.
Firefighters Thursday morning received an emergency call about a house on fire, WNDU reported. Emily Winterrud, the daughter-in-law of the homeowner, said that the fire originated from a problem in the basement and that smoke quickly spread throughout the house. She vividly described her panic in those moments.
Firefighters soon arrived at the scene. She was met with visible smoke and flames emerging from the dwelling. Inside the house during the fire were an 8-year-old girl, her nanny and their faithful canine companion named Cain, who was three years old.
Despite the circumstances, the firefighters were able to put out the fire by evacuating the house safely and saving Cain.
Winterrode emotionally recounted how everything around Cain’s outpost was engulfed in flames during the incident. His loyal rescuers took him to the emergency clinic where they gave him oxygen to help him breathe.
“The sight of an animal struggling to breathe on its own is truly heartbreaking,” Winterrode said heartily.
Unfortunately, on Saturday, the family broke the news that Cain did not survive his injury.
“It is with sorrow that we inform you that Cain did not succeed,” they revealed. “The decision had to be taken today because there was fluid in his lungs and he had difficulty breathing despite being given oxygen,” the family said.
Winterroad reports that her 8-year-old cousin and babysitter are doing well after they managed to escape from the fire.
